Tax-Filer Empowerment Canada Welcomes the Passage of Bill C-47

June 27, 2023

OTTAWA – Tax-Filer Empowerment Canada (TFEC), the national association representing Canada’s tax preparation and software industry, is welcoming the passage of Bill C-47, the federal government’s Budget Implementation Act. This legislation permanently makes electronic signatures valid for a number of key tax forms.

“The job of TFEC member companies is to give Canadians the tools to file their taxes affordably, accurately and independent of the CRA. TFEC has long advocated for the expansion of electronic signatures to give tax filers more convenience and flexibility,” said Dan Pfeffer, Executive Director of TFEC.

Bill C-47 received Royal Assent on June 22, 2023, and the following forms are now authorized for e-signature:

  • T183 Information Return for Electronic Filing of an Individual’s Income Tax and Benefit Return;
  • T183CORP Information Return for Corporations Filing Electronically;
  • T183TRUST Information Return for the Electronic Filing of a Trust Return.
  • T2200 Declaration of Conditions of Employment;
  • RC71 Statement of Discounting Transaction; and
  • RC72 Notice of the Actual Amount of the Refund of Tax

“Nine out of every ten Canadian taxpayers files electronically. That’s why expanding e-signature is such an important step in keeping Canada’s tax filing system responsive and accessible. TFEC fought hard for this step, and we appreciate the Government of Canada listening and putting the needs of tax filers first,” said Pfeffer.

Formed in 2018, TFEC is a 12-member national industry association comprised of Canada’s leading tax preparation and software firms. TFEC members’ services are widely available across Canada, and the organization collaborates closely with the CRA, Revenu Quebec, and other provincial bodies to ensure all Canadians have access to impartial, accurate, and accessible tax preparation and software options.
